8 Weeks before the move:

  • Contact several moving companies, gather estimates for each company.
  • Once you have chosen your mover, discuss total costs, timing and packing. Be sure to ask about any additional costs such as extra garment boxes, etc.
  • Place all receipts and all paper work in a file folder. Your moving expenses are tax deductible!
  • Gather information about your new city. At Apartment Corner we offer Community Information and Maps of  the Greater Toronto Area. 
  • If you have children, obtain information about their new school and also contact their old school and make arrangements for the transfer.
  • Start to use things that you will not be able to pack. Such items may include frozen food, etc.

7 Weeks before the move:

  • Create an inventory list of all your belongings. A good idea is to break this list down into rooms. This way you will have an idea what will be going in each room.
  • Decide which items to leave behind. This might also be a good time to think about hosting a garage sale or donating some goods to charity.
  • Arrange for disposal of large items or any items not sold or donated to charity.
  • Be sure to contact your insurance companies for your car, house, etc. Make any changes that might be necessary.
  • Notify your present landlord of your intent to move.

6 Weeks before the move:

  • Cancel all memberships with any clubs or organizations you are a part of. Ask if these same services are offered in your new community and if so, arrange for a new membership.
  • Begin to familiarize yourself with your new community. Make note of where everything is located such as police stations, fire departments, grocery stores, etc.
  • Contact dentists, doctors, schools and obtain all personal records from them.

5 Weeks before the move:

  • Begin the long process of packing. Begin by gathering suitable boxes or containers.
  • Cancel all deliveries being made to your house/apartment such as newspapers.
  • Contact schools in your new community and begin to register the children.
  • If you are bringing pets with you on your move contact the veterinarian and obtain all of your pet's records.

4 Weeks before the move:

  • Contact the property manager or landlord and make arrangements for the date/time of your move.
  • Fill out your Canada Post change of address form. You may also want to think about changing the address on your license, health card, etc.
  • Make airline or any hotel reservations (if needed).
  • Contact your moving company and arrange the moving date and time.
  • Arrange to have your utilities (gas, hydro, oil, water, phone, etc.) disconnected. Make sure that you tell them to disconnect the day after your moving day, you don't want to be left without power.
  • If you need to purchase new furniture, determine what you need and where you plan to purchase it.

3 Weeks before the move:

  • Make arrangements for the children on for the day of the move. Contact a baby-sitter.
  • Open a bank account in your new community.
  • If you are driving, map out the route that you are going to be driving. You can contact CAA, for the most direct route.
  • Make arrangements to have your car serviced before you depart. Have the oil checked and make sure it is safe to drive.

2 Weeks before the move:

  • Have your utilities connected at your new home. Contact your property manager or landlord to do so.
  • Clean and clear out your home. Throw away items that cannot be given away.
  • Begin packing items that you don't use everyday.
  • Clear out your safety deposit boxes!
  • Dispose of all flammable products such as cleaning fluids, matches, acids, etc.
  • Drain all oil and gasoline from your lawnmower and power tools for safe transportation.
  • Disassemble large goods such as barbecues and place the parts is sturdy boxes or containers.

1 Week before the move:

  • Mark a box with "OPEN FIRST". Place items that you will need to unpack first inside this box.
  • Give away any plants that will not be coming with you.
  • Confirm all your travel arrangements.
  • Pack a small box or cooler and place snacks and beverages inside, if you are staying overnight don't forget to pack toothbrushes, toothpaste and other toiletry items.
  • Defrost your refrigerator if you are taking it with you.
  • Finish packing any items that you may have forgotten.
  • Carry all valuables with you.

The day before the move:

  • Remove all the sheets and comforters from your beds. Pack them in a box that will be unloaded first.
  • Supervise the move if you have paid movers. Boxes that will be unpacked first should be loaded last.
  • Pack your vacuum last since you will probably use it before you unpack your belongings.
  • Do a last minute check of your old apartment/house and make sure that you have not left anything behind.
  • Give the movers a number where you can be reached just in case they experience any trouble or delays along the way.

Moving Day:

  • Be sure that you have payment to give to the movers when they arrive.
  • Check to make sure that all of the utilities are connected and functioning as they should be.
  • Make sure that your phone is connected and working properly. If not, contact your phone company and have them connect it.
  • Review the floor plan (available on apartmentcorner.com) and decide where all of the furniture will go.
  • Check all of your goods and make sure that they are not damaged. Keep in mind most moving companies are not responsible for any damages to goods inside the boxes.
  • If you are moving into an apartment complex, make sure you know where the superintendent's apartment is.
